Should the panel follow you down, and should a group fold away?

You named six gaps between the deployed Activity and its sheet. Four of them the sheet already settles, so they are build work and need no decision from you. These two it does not: one because the sheet deliberately does the opposite, and one because the sheet never drew it.

Should the detail panel follow you down the list?

the sheet says no, on purpose

Today it does not follow: it sits at the top and scrolls away. That is not an oversight, it is a scar. The panel used to be sticky and capped at screen height with its own inner scrollbar, and that is what hid the trace from you on 4 August. The cap and the inner scroll were removed and the sheet has stayed that way since. So making it follow means choosing how, and every option pays for it somewhere.

1 · Today: no follow what you saw
The panel scrolls away with the page. Every part of it is reachable, but once you are ten rows down it is gone, and picking a new row throws you back up.

The panel follows while there is room, and when its own bottom arrives it lets go and scrolls with the page. No inner scrollbar anywhere, so nothing can hide behind one, and a long trace is still reached by scrolling the page you were already scrolling.

Scroll it: the panel rides along, and the list keeps moving under it.
3 · Two panes, each its own scroll the inbox pattern
The page stops scrolling; the list and the panel scroll independently, like the Inbox or ManyChat. It follows perfectly. The cost is that the panel gets an inner scrollbar again, which is the shape that hid the trace, and the whole screen stops behaving like a page.

A fourth shape exists and is not drawn because it fails on its face: sticky and capped at screen height, which is what shipped before 4 August. It is the only one that can hide content, and it did.

The fork

  1. Sticks, then releases. One CSS line, no new scroll region, nothing can hide. The panel leaves the screen only when you have scrolled past all of it. Recommended.
  2. Two panes. Best following behaviour, and the pattern you already know from the Inbox. Accepts an inner scrollbar on the panel and turns Activity into an app-shaped screen rather than a page.
  3. Leave it. Nothing can ever hide, and picking a row from far down the list keeps sending you back to the top.

Should "Needs action" fold away?

The sheet's group headings are plain rows: a label and a count, nothing to press. You want to collapse one. The question underneath it is which group you are trying to get rid of, because the answer differs.

Both headings fold, and remember recommended
Each heading becomes a button. Folding Needs action gets a drained queue out of your way; folding Feed turns the screen into a work queue and nothing else. The count stays visible either way, so a folded group can never hide that something waits.

Only Needs action folds narrower
Just what you asked for, and half the value: the common case is wanting to see only what needs you, which folding Needs action cannot do. It is also an odd screen where one heading is pressable and the one under it is not.

The fork

  1. Both fold, and the choice is remembered in the URL like every other view state, so a folded Feed survives a reload and is linkable. Recommended.
  2. Both fold, forgotten on reload. Less to build, and it re-opens every time you come back, which is the thing that makes people stop using it.
  3. Only Needs action folds. Exactly what was asked, and it cannot express "show me only what needs me".
